Types of radiation therapy modalities we offer:
External Beam Radiation Therapy
External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is one of the most common radiation treatment modalities and is used to treat a variety of malignancies and some benign conditions. A computed tomography (CT) scan is completed in our office for radiation planning, allowing us to generate unique radiation plans for each patient to properly target the tumor and limit radiation dose to nearby healthy organs. During treatment, a linear accelerator generates high-energy X-rays, which are then directed at a tumor. These X-rays produce DNA damage to damage and ultimately kill tumor cells.
Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) is a specific type of EBRT that requires imaging of the patient prior to treatment delivery and adjustment of the patient's position based on the imaging. The most common imaging modalities used are low-dose X-rays and CT scans. We compare these images to those completed for radiation planning to ensure the patient is in the proper treatment position prior to administering treatment. This allows us to treat smaller volumes to limit the dose to healthy organs.
IGRT treatments may take a few minutes longer than those without imaging because of the additional time required to gather and review the scans. In some special cases, fiducial markers will have previously been placed inside or near the tumor; we can image these during treatment for even more accuracy.
Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is an EBRT technique that uses advanced computer programming to create an ideal radiation plan that simultaneously targets a tumor while minimizing dose to nearby organs. This technique facilitates the treatment of complicated tumor shapes, tumors close to critical organs, and targets requiring different radiation doses.
Multiple beam angles are generated to conform to the target shape and create an ideal modulated plan. During the IMRT planning process, the dosimetrist (radiation planner) assigns priorities to different treatment parameters. For example, one priority may be to increase the dose to the tumor while another priority may be to reduce the dose to an organ. The computer system then uses a complex algorithm to create a plan that respects the predetermined goals and priorities.
Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)
Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) are two EBRT techniques in which a very high radiation dose is delivered in few treatments. SBRT and SRS are both ablative treatments of tumors/targets in the body and brain, respectively. Because a high radiation dose is delivered in a few treatments, the treatment planning and delivery process is more complex and requires high skill and precision. These radiation techniques often use IMRT to simultaneously improve the dose to the target and limit the dose to the nearby organs.
